MSC defends its programme amid criticism

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has responded to the leading fisheries experts who challenged the standards’ credibility in an article in the current Nature by issuing a statement in its own defense. Six experts from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego and elsewhere said MSC is putting bureaucracy before biology. They noted concerns about the certification of pollock and Antarctic krill, which they do not deem sustainable, among other fisheries, and the certification of fisheries fished by bottom trawling. “Every fishery certified to the MSC standard is sustainable and well-managed and fisheries are not, as the authors assert, certified before they can demonstrate their sustainability,” MSC assured. “The MSC programme does not prescribe gear types or speci...
